Every April 2nd, the world marks Autism Awareness Day, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and acceptance of autistic individuals. For me, this is more than just a day on the calendar—it’s a deeply personal journey.

As a father to a wonderful autistic child who will turn five in May, I’ve seen firsthand the joys and challenges that come with raising a neurodivergent child. I’ve navigated the maze of diagnosis, school placements, therapies, and the constant battle to ensure my son gets the support he deserves. And I know I am not alone. Some of my friends and their families have walked similar paths, sharing the same frustrations, hopes, and small victories that mean the world.

The Road to Diagnosis: A Waiting Game

The process of getting an autism diagnosis in the UK can be long and exhausting. Waiting lists are painfully slow, often leaving parents in limbo, desperate for answers and support. I remember the feeling of knowing my son needed help but being told to “wait and see.” That uncertainty is gut-wrenching.

Early intervention is crucial, yet many parents are left fighting for assessments, referrals, and therapies that should be readily available. We shouldn’t have to fight this hard for our children to be seen and heard.

Finding the Right School: A Battle for Inclusion

Education is another battlefield. Every child on the spectrum is unique—what works for one may not work for another. Some thrive in mainstream schools with support, while others need specialist settings. The challenge is not just finding the right school but actually getting a place.

I’ve sat through meetings, read endless reports, and completed mountains of paperwork, all in the hope of securing the best future for my son. It’s emotionally draining. No parent should have to beg for an education that fits their child’s needs.

The Emotional Rollercoaster

There are days filled with overwhelming pride—when my son says a new word, engages in a way he hasn’t before, or accomplishes something we were told might never happen. And there are days of frustration, exhaustion, and tears, when the world just doesn’t seem to understand.

Through it all, I’ve learned to celebrate the small victories, to embrace the unique way my son sees the world, and to fight, always fight, for what he deserves.

Raising Awareness, Building Acceptance

Autism Awareness Day isn’t just about lighting up landmarks in blue or sharing social media posts. It’s about real change. It’s about making sure no parent feels alone in this journey, no child is left behind due to a lack of support, and no family has to fight tooth and nail for basic rights.

If you’re a fellow parent navigating this world, I see you. I stand with you. Keep going.

And to everyone else—listen, learn, and advocate. Autism awareness must lead to autism acceptance. Only then will we create a world where every autistic child can flourish, just as they are.
